Eason the Big Brother
Every evening Mum reads me a bedtime story. But tonight she looks a little bit uneasy.
“Eason, would you like to be a big brother?”
“What?”
“There's a baby in here!” Mum points at her tummy and smiles.
I am too surprised to say anything.
Dad comes in and says when the baby grows up, there will be one more person to love me and to play with me.
I don't know what to feel. It is good to have someone to play with me, but the baby may take away Mum and Dad's love for me.
I tell my good friends that I am going to be a big brother.
Tom shouts, “That's terrible. A little baby is a pest, because it cries all the time! And it always stays in Mum's arms.”
Amy doesn't agree with him,“I don't think so. A little baby is so cute. I'd like to have a baby sister!”
The baby grows bigger and bigger in Mum's tummy. Mum becomes fatter and fatter. She always feels hungry and thirsty. Her feet start to swell. She often feels tired, and she can't sleep well at night.
One morning Mum says she feels labour pains. The baby is coming out.
When I go into the ward, Mum is asleep. She looks a little pale. Dad points at a baby, “Look Eason! This is our new family member, your sister Emily!”
She looks so wrinkly and doesn't look like a girl at all.
We take Emily home. Mum and Dad spend all day around her. They are busy feeding her, hugging her or changing diapers for her. They have almost no time for me.
Mum's friends come to see Emily. They all want to hug her, saying she looks like an angel. They bring many presents, but none of them are for me!
When I am watching cartoons or playing with the ball, Mum often stops me.
Emily spends too too too much time sleeping!
I am often woken up at night by her cry.
The baby is hungry again. Mum needs to feed her, burp her, and then put her to sleep.
It seems that what Tom said is right. A little baby is really troublesome. Besides, I don't think Mum and Dad love me as much as they used to.
Tom and Amy come to see Emily. But Emily seems not to welcome them. She cries loudly in their arms. When I pick her up again, she stops crying at once. Amazing!
When I feed her, she always looks at me. I think she likes me. It feels good!
Since then, when Emily cries, I do all kinds of things to amuse her.
I'm the only one that can immediately stop her from crying!
Emily grows bigger and bigger. She follows me wherever I go. We play together. We laugh together, and I like the way she laughs.
In front of Mum's camera I like to show the two-fingered “V”. Emily does too, stretching three fingers.
How funny she is!
Although she often cries, sleeps a lot and cannot understand me, I gradually begin to like her!
Now, I think that Amy is right. It is good to have a baby sister! And it is good to be a BIG BROTHER!
