Why Am I a DIYer?
Are you a DIYer?
Zhou works for a computer company in Beijing. Sometimes it is not easy for him to relax after work. One day he passed a toy shop, he had an idea. “Why not make them myself?” Then he began to make model planes, model ships and something else. He believes DIY makes his life relaxing and colourful.
Tina, a doctor from America has the similar experience like Zhou, “ I had a hard time and pottery (陶艺) helped to make me feel better in a way. It's very calming.”
James thinks DIY provides people with something different. “A lot of people in London don't need any new products, but hope to have new experiences. Instead of buying the products, I am more willing to go through the process. I want to walk out of my comfort zone. I want to meet somebody else and work with them.” James said.
“I needed furniture for my living room.” says John Ross, a postman who lives in Sydney, “and I just didn't have enough money to buy it. So I decided to do it myself.” Like many young people these days, John is facing the high cost of living, so DIY helps save money.
Jim Hatfield, a Biology teacher in Germany, uses all his free time to change rubbish into many pieces of works of art. He says, “DIY is a new way to make people pay attention to making environment better.”
Many people can benefit (受益) a lot from DIY, so there is no wonder an increasing number of people are becoming DIYers.

A Desk to Love
So, my little desk is done. It took me a lot longer than I thought it would, but it doesn't matter and here we are ... a “lovely” desk is done.
At first, I planned to sell it because I did not think it would fit into my new little house. It is rough (粗糙的), maybe a little bit ugly, but it is a desk, indeed a little desk.
A funny thing happened later. While I was moving things around to take a picture of my little desk. I found a perfect place for it. It looks nice near the dining table, so I put it next to the back door just between the dining table and the cupboard.
In fact, I don't use the little desk as an actual one, but it perfectly stays there when I use it from time to time as a buffet to hold other items. Snacks, salad cream or tissues (纸巾) can easily be grabbed.
Actually, making such a little desk, or DIY is always fun. When you start, surprising things often happen. And sometimes, things don't work as planned.
Isn't it similar in life? Something you are not sure about comes, but after some time, it becomes a good fit. Something may not be your first choice, but later it works. And it works very well.
