Asking the Way
It was three o'clock on Monday afternoon. The little pig Leo wanted to go to the science museum to see some robots. But he didn't know the way.
At that moment, an old dog walked by. “He should know the way to the science museum,” Leo thought. Leo asked the dog, “Excuse me, how can I get to the science museum?”
“Sorry, I don't know — I am new here,” the old dog answered.
“Oh, thanks anyway!” replied Leo.
Leo kept walking. Then he saw a bookstore. “Oh, someone here may know the way to the science museum,” thought Leo.
As he walked towards the bookstore, he saw a duck.
“Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the science museum?”
“Of course! It's not far. Go straight down the street and turn right at the hospital. It's next to the library.”
“Thank you — have a nice day!” Leo said happily. On the way to the museum, Leo saw two big teddy bears in front of a cinema. “Oh, what lovely bears!” thought Leo. “I would love to take some photos with them. It's only three thirty. There is still much time for me.”
After he took some photos with the bears, Leo forgot which way to go! What a bad memory! Now he had to ask for help again. So he asked a goat.
Oh, the science museum? See that tall building? The science museum is just behind it.
Really? Thank you so much!
Finally, Leo arrived at the science museum. But then he saw a sign on the door that said: “Closed on Mondays”!
Different Jobs
Alina's family moves to a big city and lives in a small house there.
After moving there, Alina goes to a new school. One day, the children are talking about their parents' jobs in the classroom.
“My father is a basketball coach. He's really good at basketball. He often teaches me how to play basketball in the gym near our house. My mother is a housewife. She looks after me at home,” Edward says happily.
“My father is a hard-working postman. He delivers mail on time every day. My mother is a secretary in a company. She is always busy,” says Lily.
“My father is a scientist. He works in a lab. I want to be a scientist like him. My mother is a teacher in a middle school. She loves her students very much,” says Jodie.
“My father is a great man. He's a pilot. He takes people to lots of different places. My mother is a TV reporter. My parents are very busy so they have little time to be with me. But still, I love them,” says Sam.
“My father is a brave police officer. He helps people in danger. My mother is a factory worker. She works hard,” says Carlo.
“My father is a businessman. He goes on business trips a lot. He always buys me gifts from different countries. Look! Here is a watch he got me from Japan,” Alice says proudly.
“What about your parents, Alina?”
“My parents are cleaners,” Alina answers timidly. “No matter how bad the weather is, they get outside early in the morning and clean the streets.”
“Ew, that sounds gross! Who'd want a job like that? Just think of all the icky things you'd have to pick up ...” says Alice, cringing. Alina's face turns red and she feels sad. She sits in her chair for a long time without saying a word.
After school, she doesn't wait for her father and goes back home alone.
“What happened, Alina? Why are you so sad?” her mother asks. Alina tells her mother what happened at school and then asks, “Do you like your job, Mum?”
Alina's mother smiles and says, “Of course we do, Sweetie. Sure we get a little dirty, but the city gets clean when we clear away all the rubbish and dirt. Everybody is happy to see that. We make our city more beautiful and make others happier. That's why we are cleaners.
Hearing that, Alina gives her mother a big hug. “I'm proud of you and Dad,” she exclaims joyfully.
