It was the turkey that made it the worst Thanksgiving ever ... well, it nearly did. All the family—my grandparents, my parents, my aunt and uncle, my cousin, my sister and I—expected the turkey. However, turkey is not the easiest thing to cook. It takes a lot of time to prepare and a lot of work to cook ... and there are a lot of chances for things to go wrong.

My mum and dad bought a nice, big turkey a few days before Thanksgiving. My mum was proud of herself as she got it for a good price. The night before Thanksgiving, Mum got the turkey out of the fridge. Early the next morning, my sister and I helped her put some butter and salt on the turkey, and then Mum put it in the oven. It looked like it would be delicious. My sister and I were excited.

But soon, we noticed something was wrong. The oven was not heating up. Dad checked it closely. Then he said in a low voice, “It's broken!”

Mum's heart nearly stopped. She didn't want her dinner to be a failure. We didn't know what to do. How were we going to feed everyone without the turkey? Mum looked worried.

Finally, Dad had an idea, and we all agreed with his suggestion to order pizza instead. After all, Thanksgiving is about giving thanks and spending time with your family. If we did not have turkey, it was different but there was nothing awful about it.

That evening, we shared a delicious pizza. We had a great time, talking, eating and playing games. Thanksgiving without turkey can still be fun!

 The Spring Festival Eve

It was the fridge that made it the worst Spring Festival Eve ever. Well, it almost did. All of our family—my dad, my mum, my little brother and I—were looking forward to the dumplings. But making dumplings is not easy. It takes time to make the wrappers and prepare the filling ... and there are many chances for things to go wrong.

The day before Spring Festival Eve, my mum and I made a lot of dumplings. Mum was happy because the dumplings looked nice and tidy. After we finished, we put them in the fridge to keep them fresh. Mum told us that we would cook them together when she came back from work the next evening.

The next morning, Mum went to work early. My dad, my little brother and I stayed at home. In the afternoon, Dad opened the fridge to get a drink. Suddenly, he noticed something was wrong. The fridge was not cooling down. He checked the plug and found it was loose. My little brother had unplugged it to charge his toy car!

We looked at the dumplings. They were all soft and sticky. Most of them were broken. Dad looked worried. How could we have our dinner without dumplings? Mum would be back soon, and we didn’t know what to do.

Then, I had an idea. I suggested learning to make dumplings by watching a video. Dad agreed. We found a video online and followed the steps. We made the wrappers, prepared the filling, and started wrapping. It was not easy, and the dumplings didn’t look very good, but we tried our best.

When Mum came home, she was surprised to see us making dumplings together. She smiled and said, “You did a great job!” That night, we ate the dumplings we made ourselves. They tasted delicious. We talked and laughed together. Spring Festival Eve without perfect dumplings can still be warm and happy. After all, the Spring Festival is about being together and helping each other with love.
