What We Eat and How We Live

I love dancing. I dance for half an hour every day. I get nine hours of sleep every night, so l am always full of energy.

It is important for me to keep fit. I also have a healthy diet. I never go to school without breakfast. I often have a pancake and some milk. For lunch, I like fish, meat and tofu. I also eat lots of fruit and vegetables every day. I seldom eat cakes or sweets. Too much sugar is bad for our teeth.

I am a homebody. I don't exercise very often. I love beef and mutton, but I don't eat a lot of vegetables. I have a sweet tooth and it is hard for me to say no to cakes. Sometimes I stay up late.

My lifestyle is unhealthy. I want to change it. I need to get enough sleep. I plan to eat more fruit and vegetables and less sugar. Sport is good for my health too. I plan to go swimming every week.

My Lifestyle

For me, a healthy lifestyle is all about a healthy diet, enough exercise and rest.

For breakfast, I usually have a pie and an egg. For lunch, I have rice, meat and vegetables. I also have a yogurt between meals. My mum likes to cook noodles in different ways, so I often eat noodles for dinner.

I do sport almost every day. Sport helps me keep fit.

I sleep for about 9 hours most nights. A good night's sleep gives me lots of energy for the next day.

I can stay fit with a healthy lifestyle.

Food Pyramids 视频文字

The smallest one is about fats and sweets, they give us fat and sugar. They will make us fat and slow. One must eat very little or nothing from this step. The second is meat, fish and eggs. They gave us protein (蛋白质) and make people strong. A third step is all about dairy products (乳制品). They also gave us protein. This group has milk, cheese and butter. We must eat these foods from one to three times a day. The fourth step is very important. The fruit and vegetables give us all kinds of vitamins. They keep us a healthy body and be strong. The base of the pyramid is the carbohydrates (碳水化合物). Here you can find cereals, bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. They gave us energy and make us energetic. And don't forget to drink a lot of water every day. It keeps the body working properly.

Dealing with Our Stress

The world is changing fast. School, friends and family can all bring us stress. This has an effect on young people's mental health .

Oct 10 was World Mental Health Day. TEENS talked to two students about how they deal with the stress in their lives.

Yu Mingge, 14, Shanxi

My voice is lower these days because of puberty (青春期). I sound like a duck. I am afraid of talking to others. I also feel sad because I'm the shortest kid in my class. I don't feel confident about playing basketball.

But being sad cannot solve our problems. I talk to my teachers and get help from them. I can also try to have a balanced diet and get more exercise. Now, I feel less lonely and start accepting body changes. I believe I can become taller next year.

Zhao Xin, 15, Beijing

I'm an unhappy Grade 9 student. I have different kinds of tests. I worry about my grades all the time, and it makes me feel tired.

But what can I do? I have to face them. I'm trying to plan my time well when I'm studying. I also talk with my parents, and they give me some tips. I don't worry too much now and feel relaxed.

How to Choose Food in a Supermarket 视频文字

Here is a simple 3-step way to help you know if a food is healthy when you shop in the supermarket.

Step 1: Look at the color

Color not only makes food look yummy, but also helps you choose healthy foods for your meals. Usually, white foods like bread and sugar don't have much nutrition (营养). But bright-colored foods like broccoli, carrots and blueberries are full of good nutrition.

Step 2: Read the ingredient list (成分表)

What if the food is in a box or bag, and you can't see its real color? Just read the ingredients list. Here are two easy tips:

Length: Long ingredient lists are usually bad. Shorter is better (this is almost always true!)

Order: Ingredients are written from the most to the least. So choose foods where natural ingredients are first, and the ones you don't want are last.

Step 3: Look at the nutrition label (标签)

Sometimes you can't tell how much of each ingredient is in the food. Then you need to look at the nutrition label. It tells you all the good things in the food, like fat and protein.

Most nutrition labels use 100 grams as the standard. This makes it easy for you to compare different foods fast.

Try this 3-step way next time you're not sure to buy a food. It will help you choose well!

Advice for Teens

Kevin: Hi, Doctor Li.

Doctor: Hi, Kevin. How are you feeling?

Kevin: I feel tired all the time.

Doctor: Hmm ... are you getting enough sleep?

Kevin: Not really. I often stay up late. Sometimes, I wake up during the night too.

Doctor: A sleep timetable might help. That means going to bed at the same time every night, even   at weekends. And go to bed early!

Kevin: I can do that.

Doctor: You should also do something relaxing before bed for about 30 minutes. Reading, taking a warm bath or listening to soft music could work. Now ... tell me about your diet. What do you usually have for breakfast?

Kevin: Well ... I don't often eat breakfast. I get up too late. Then, I don't have time for breakfast before school.

Doctor: But breakfast is an important meal. You shouldn't skip it. Eat a simple, healthy breakfast every day so that you have enough energy for the morning.

Kevin: Like cake?

Doctor: No! Cake has too much sugar. Do you eat a lot of sugar?

Kevin: Oh yes, I have a sweet tooth.

Doctor: Too much sugar is bad for you. Try to eat less of it.

Kevin: OK. I understand. Thanks, Doctor Li.
