The Camping Trip
Last weekend everyone was very busy. We were getting ready for our camping trip.
Son: I'll get the bikes.
Daughter: I'll get the fishing rods.
Soon everything was ready. We jumped into the camper van and set off on our travels.
Daughter: Let's go camping.
Son: Yay.
The first day was great. We drove through miles and miles of forests. When we got to the campsite, we rode our bikes and went swimming.
On the second day we went fishing.
It was lovely to eat fresh food.
But on the third day, there was a problem.
Dad thought he could smell something.
Dad: Are you burning the fish?
Daughter: No, Dad.
Mum thought she could see something.
Mum: Is that a rain cloud?
Son: I don't think so.
The smell of burning got stronger. The sky turned black then orange. It was a forest fire!
Mum: Get into the camper van!
Dad: Hurry up!
Mum drove fast. The fire went faster. Thick black smoke was everywhere.
Suddenly a burning tree fell across the road.
We were all scared.
Son: Mum! A tree!
But I could see something in the tree's branches.
Dad got out of the van and quickly picked up the little animal. It was hurt.
Fire was everywhere. Mum drove faster and faster to escape the fire.
Soon the fire was miles behind us. We were safe. But we were very worried about the koala.
We took it to the nearest animal hospital.
The vet took good care of the koala.
He put a bandage on its leg.
Doctor: It's OK. It just hurt its foot.
The koala was OK. But it wasn't strong enough to go back to the forest. So we took it home.
Dad: We can look after it until it's better.
After a week, the koala's leg was better. So we drove all the way back to the forest.
Daughter: This is where you belong.
I was very sad to say goodbye to the koala.
But all the animals were returning to the forest.
Daughter: Goodbye, little friend.
It was a long journey home. We were all sad.
But look what I found in the van ... the little koala!

When I Was a Little Girl
Today is my 10th birthday. Mum helps me put on Hanfu to celebrate. I love it!
“How I wish I could go back to being a little girl!”
“What's your childhood like, Mum?” I ask.
Mum says, ...
“When I was a little girl, I was like a running horse.”
“I would run down alleys, to suburban gardens, even to farther fields. I could sniff colourful flowers, seek insects in the trees, or watch frogs hunting for food. Sometimes I tripped on bumpy roads, but I still liked to run.”
“When I was a little girl, I was like a naughty monkey.”
“I would climb cherry trees to taste the juicy fruit. I would scare the mother bird away to talk to baby birds. Once I poked a honeycomb with a long stick. Ow ... Lots of bees rushed at me.”
“When I was a little girl, I was like a dancing butterfly.”
“After school I liked to play jump rope with my friends. When it was dark, I would be unwilling to return home. When the holidays came, we would rehearse different dances.”
“When I was a little girl, sometimes I had my problems.”
“When Mum nagged me about my habits, I would be unhappy. I was so tired of the boring test papers day after day. I would feel so upset when I was misunderstood by my friends.”
“When I was a little girl, I was sometimes a curious explorer.”
“I had many, many questions. Where did babies come from? Were there aliens in the space? How did dinosaurs disappear? Could animals talk? Which came first, the chicken or the egg ...”
“When I was a little girl, I was like a sweet angel.”
“I could cook some dishes or a bowl of noodles for Mum and Dad when they came home from work. When their birthdays came, I usually picked a beautiful flower, or performed a flute song for them. I loved my animal friends. I often gave them delicious food and cleaned their home.”
“When I was a little girl, I had many fantasies.”
“When I found my body changed, I was worried, but soon, I found why. Sometimes I wished to grow up quickly. Then I could talk about romance with my friends. I could wear high-heeled shoes. I could dress like a lady.”
“When I was a little girl, I cried when I was upset. I laughed when I was happy. Now I have you. I am always your mum and your friend.”
I give Mum a big hug. I know a mum is a warm harbor for every child.
