A Little Fireman
It was a cold Sunday morning. In the ward (病房) a young mother stared down at her son who was dying. He looked so small and weak that even a gentle touch could break him.
Although her heart was filled with sadness, the stubborn mother still expected her son's dreams to come true. She bent down and whispered the words to her son's ear, “Bob, did you ever think about what you wanted to be when you grew up? What's your dream?”
“Mommy, still remember the story about a fireman you told me when I was a little boy? I have always wanted to be a brave fireman.” Though the words cost him much strength, and he was now coughing and out of breath, the mother could feel the long-lost excitement came back to her son's face. She smiled back and said, “Let's see if we can make your dream come true. Now let's have some sleep.”
Later that day she went to her local fire station, where she met Fireman Philip who was in charge there. She explained to Philip her son's final wish and begged if it might be possible to give her son a ride on a fire engine and wished it wouldn't cause them too much trouble.
After hearing the mother's words, Fireman Philip was deeply moved and replied, “Look, maybe we can do more than just giving him a ride on the fire engine.” He could see that the mother's eyes were glittering with gratitude and continued, “If you have your son ready at seven o'clock Wednesday morning, we'll make him an honorary (荣誉的) fireman for the whole day. He can come down to the fire station and go out on all fire calls! And to make him feel that he is a real fireman, we'll get a real fire uniform for him — not a toy one. It is made right here, so we can get it fast.”
